New forms of work in agriculture

New forms of work in agriculture

Based on an interdisciplinary approach and field surveys, this book offers an original perspective on agricultural work. It differs from analyses focused on employment or status by focusing on the reality of how work is experienced and organised. It renews thinking on agricultural change by highlighting often invisible forms of work and questions the sustainability of current models. Coordinated by Nathalie Hostiou, Pierre Gasselin and Benoit Dedieu (INRAE), it is published by Quae.

French agriculture is undergoing a profound restructuring of its working methods with the emergence of new practices, organisations and professional figures. These transformations are diverse and heterogeneous, yet remain largely unknown.
This book sheds light on the diversity of the changes underway through concrete examples: the development of collective farms, the growing dissociation between land, capital and labour, the impacts of agroecology and robotisation, and the restructuring of work collectives around local food circuits. It also reveals new types of workers, whether they are neo-farmers from outside the agricultural sector, seasonal or posted workers, volunteers, or even the active role of animals in livestock farming systems.
